The Encounter AT is Sumitomo's Off-Road All-Terrain tire developed for drivers of pickup trucks, crossovers and SUVs who want go-anywhere capability and durability combined with confident all-season traction, even in snow.
Utilizing a rugged, all-terrain compound molded into a purposeful pattern, the Encounter AT is designed to perform on any surface. The open tread design features stepped edges on the center blocks for added bite in loose terrain, and the open shoulders employ connecting ribs for improved stability. Four wide, circumferential grooves effectively evacuate water from the contact patch for confident grip where standing water is present, and in-block sipes create the additional biting edges needed for traction on slippery surfaces. Winter-focused zigzag sipes in the shoulders and the independent tread blocks work together to provide snow traction. All tires in the Encounter AT lineup meet the industry's severe snow service requirements and are branded with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol.
The Encounter AT's internal construction consists of a two-ply polyester casing beneath two wide steel belts. A spirally wound reinforcement adds increased support for enhanced stability and ride comfort.
Note: While non-winter tires featuring the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol may provide additional longitudinal snow traction beyond what all-season (M+S) tires not bearing the symbol can deliver, they do not match the capability of a true winter tire in all adverse weather conditions.

...They handle well in dry and wet road conditions...
Great set of tires at this price point. They handle well in dry and wet road conditions and the road noise is less than might be expected from an AT. The Severe Winter rating means that they do quite well in snow conditions as well. I had a set on my 2006 Tundra and now this set on our Tacoma and will certainly buy again when needed.

...Still break the rears loose a bit easily in rain or snow (maybe I've an unnecessarily lead foot?), but once underway, there's enough grip to inspire reasonable confidence without encouraging silly gratuitous driving (always in a bit of a rush)...
For the price (which had very recently gotten considerably better sans warning), tough to think of a better jack-of-all-trades tire. Still break the rears loose a bit easily in rain or snow (maybe I've an unnecessarily lead foot?), but once underway, there's enough grip to inspire reasonable confidence without encouraging silly gratuitous driving (always in a bit of a rush). The tires communicate with noise and vibes when taxed with verve, and they lose their composure gradually when leaned on. They do discourage ME from driving at 8/10ths or more, but they don't just give up without warning or protest. Think 'less off-roady' tires would make it easier to be more effective at being an annoying driver.
I actually climb curbs whenever I parallel park, to leave a bit more room on slim roads that are barely 3 or 4 vehicles wide. Sidewalls actually make this easier than expected, felt encouraged enough to go looking for excuses to 'soft-road'. Despite recent snowfall, no need for 4WD; just a bit less leadfoot got me through dirt mud snow slush and any combo of the above. Unpaved trails were made light work of. Haven't gone too far off the beaten paths yet, but looking forward to it now!
They're not ideal long road trip tires, but they behave and respond well enough on the highway, even well over posted speed limits. Don't quite love them, but I'm pleasantly surprised. Provided the price stays reasonable, and the performance doesn't degrade too much over time, I'll consider them again.

Best tires I’ve ever had. I always feel completely in control regardless of where I am. They are outstanding in the rain. They do well regardless of what I’ve used my truck for. I will for sure be purchasing these again.

Most customers report excellent winter performance with snow and deep snow traction scoring 9s and 10s. Ice traction shows strong results (7-10), though some variability highlights the tire's focus on rugged all-terrain capability.

...We got about 12 inches of snow and these tires didn't miss a beat. I was on the road with other trucks slipping and sliding, trying to accelerate. I felt like I was on dry pavement...
I am so impressed with these tires. I have driven in the rain and they were great. Driving on a dry highway, I can't hear any tire noise (I expected to hear noise). I finally got to try them in snow yesterday. We got about 12 inches of snow and these tires didn't miss a beat. I was on the road with other trucks slipping and sliding, trying to accelerate. I felt like I was on dry pavement. I have an AWD drive truck (the traction kicks on when the rear tires slip) I tried to get the rear tires to slip and had a tough time doing so. I pulled 3 cars and 2 trucks out of snow piles (the ridge from the plows) and only one time did my traction kick on and engage the front wheels. To be fair, one truck was a 2wd Chevy and the other one of the trucks, 2014 Ram 4X4, belongs to my neighbor. I suggested he get a set of these tires, he was looking at BFG All Terrain KO's. I've had those tires, also amazing. But for the money these can't be beat. I ordered these with a set of rims, I picked them up and installed them in my garage. One of the rims had a chip out of it and Tire rack stood behind their product and sent me a new rim. They even gave me a credit on my credit card to get the new rim mounted and balanced anywhere I chose. Great customer service and great products.

...Drove 4 hours through blowing snow and slush on the highway and didn't feel them lose grip at all. There was a little squirming changing lanes through the heavy slush built up in the middle, but they seemed to cut through it pretty good for the most part. We were cruising past everyone on the 4 lanes driving at the speed limit (110) while all other traffic had slowed to around 80 km/h...
Bought these from my local dealer up here in Canada (sorry Tirerack) and immediately set out on a road trip the next day. Oh joy, it was snowing in September up here in North Saskatchewan and Alberta......no problem, perfect conditions to throw down the gauntlet and test them out. Not a lot of info on the Sumitomo Encounter AT's, but what is there rates them very highly....on to my review.

We were cruising past everyone on the 4 lanes driving at the speed limit (110) while all other traffic had slowed to around 80 km/h. Not once did the Jeep feel anything but planted and in control......I know for a fact that the Firestones would not have handled it anywhere near as well.
Added bonus, they are as quiet or quieter on the road than the stock Destination AT's, no hum, no howl, no drone......
Weekend mileage was around 1100 kms return trip with a full gamut of weather and terrain; Snow, Slush, rain, mud (friend lives in the country, 9 miles of muddy gravel road), Off-road, Rain, and Dry pavement.
Overall, I am very happy with the purchase so far and this trip got a big passing grade from me. Sumitomo Encounter AT gets my recommendation and is definitely a replacement tire to consider.

...Definatly better compound and grip than cooper tires, the encounter AT is aggressive yet quiet on the road and so far it has plowed thru 12 of wet snow with no problems. Only problem I had was the locked 4wd actually bound up due to the amount of grip in the snow, so you'll have to get use to using more throttle to get the tires to slip a little if your full turn on the steering wheel with locked differentials and transfer case...
Bought these tires instead of the cooper at3 tires. I will be buying a set of these to replace my bfg ko's on my gmc serria, they work that good.

...Great response, great traction...
These tires almost instantly impressed me. Great response, great traction. Yes they do have a little more road noise than some of the others, but for 500$ cheaper for a set, I'll take the tiny tiny bit of road noise. I recommend these.

Great tire so far but have not driven enough miles to fully rate all conditions (ie: wear, off road, etc.). No road noise which was one of my main concerns. Very happy with the stability and comfort for my driving style. Would definitely recommended this tire.

...90% reduction in tire noise. Ride is much smoother over washboard and rough uneven roads. City and highway driving in much improved...
Recently installed a full set of these Sumitomo Encounter AT, replacing the 1/2 worn Hankook Dynapro tires. My first driving impression is 90% reduction in tire noise. Ride is much smoother over washboard and rough uneven roads. City and highway driving in much improved. I like the deep tread and snow rating, 60,000 mile warranty. I will update my impression of these tires as I put on more miles.
