The Recon Grappler A/T is Nitto's Off-Road All-Terrain tire developed for drivers of SUVs, Jeeps, and pickup trucks looking for capable off-road performance with a dramatic appearance that maintains its on-road manners and stability. Built to "keep you out in front", the Recon Grappler A/T utilizes aggressive off-road elements combined with on-road features to provide grip and predictability in year-round conditions, including light snow.

Wrangler Steadfast HT callouts

The robust, all-season compound is molded into a symmetric pattern with large tread bocks across the face and aggressive shoulder elements built to resist cuts and chips from sharp off-road surfaces. Reinforced block foundations at the base of the tread help support the pattern, adding rigidity and mitigating deformation in high-load applications for confident dry road handling. Specially engineered wide and narrow grooves are designed to limit airborne noise for enhanced sound comfort on pavement. Zig-zag main and shoulder grooves provide ample water evacuation for hydroplaning resistance as well as adding lateral and offset biting edges to boost light snow traction.

Internal construction of the Recon Grappler A/T features a two-ply reinforced polyester casing for durability and ride comfort. Two high-tensile steel belts offer a sturdy foundation for even load distribution across the footprint. Two nylon reinforcement plies further stabilize the tread for high-speed handling and durability.

As with all Grappler tires, each Recon Grappler A/T tire features two unique sidewall designs. One side is Square Block while the other features a Jagged Block design.

Nitto Reviews

...They are great in wet, great in snow, and great in mud, which I've had in 500 miles...

These tires are excellent. After leveling the truck I upsized to these tires. They are quiet, have good traction in all conditions, and are comfortable. There were only a couple of choices as I did not want an E rated tire and these are an excellent option. I am very pleased driving in town, on the highway, and in light off road/dirt roads. They are great in wet, snow, and mud, which I’ve had in 500 miles. Vey happy!

...I had to drive through heavy rain storms and didn't have any issues with hydroplaning. The road noise was minimal, and they held the road very well at 70 up to 80 mph.

So far the tires have been above standard. I took a trip across Nevada last week and didn't have any issues. I had to drive through a couple heavy rain storms and didn't have any issues with hydroplaning. The road noise was minimal, and they held the road very well at 70 up to 80 mph.

...It's done great in snow. The design is a plus for snow up to 7" that we've driven in so far. It sheds the snow even at idling speeds in sticky snow...

These tires were super quiet for first 2,000 miles. Then the loud almost rough wheel bearing noise started at speeds of 40-60 mph. The winter time is really bad with this noise but as the summer warm weather is coming it’s starting to get a little better. At highway speed of 75 mph in cold weather on some surfaces it’s got the growling sound but on slicker new black highway or rough is better. I think the block looking tread with an angled wide opening is the entire reason for the loud growl at lower speeds. The so called step on some of the lugs doesn’t help on noise but probably will help with distortion of the lugs. It’s been a good solid looking tire with good wear and no visible edge wear. I did have the front end aligned like normal the same day the tires were installed. The dry traction isn’t great and no doubt because of harder rubber for the 65,000 mile tread wear. It’s done great in snow. The design is a plus for snow up to 7” that we’ve driven in so far. It sheds the snow even at idling speeds in sticky snow. I have been in mud but not a lot of it. So far it didn’t need 4 wheel drive. If I get in deep mud or clay type mud that will change. Its solid in all cornering I’ve done. Rain is good as far as not pulling in long puddles on one side or other and 2” of rain on some hwys. I can’t comment a lot about ice. It was in auto 4x4 in patchy ice and not driving like most 4x4 drivers that wreck in ice due to that thing called lack of intelligence. It is an XL so that 5 ply tread and apparently heavier sidewalls even though they are 2 ply will need to pay attention to pot holes. It acts like a 10 ply a lot. Very stiff ride in town. I think it will last at least 55,000 miles and still have 4/32 inch. I don’t let my tires get down that far. Usually if one is at 5/32 it’s getting tires. My daughter and wife is worth a heck of a lot more than pinching pennies. I’m surprised they didn’t bring tread out farther like KO 2’s or add about 2/32” more depth.

...I have driven this tire in snow and have had no problem. These are much better than the factory Goodyear shoes.

My brother in law bought Ridge Grapplers for his 2024 GMC 2500HD and he loves them. I didn't need that aggressive of a tire so I researched the Recon Grappler. This has everything I want in a tire. My 2020 2500HD spends about 70% of it's life towing a Grand Design 2800BH travel trailer. There is a bit more road noise than I expected but this is a fairly aggressive tire for road use. The contact patch is nice and wide. I have driven this tire in snow and have had no problem. These are much better than the factory Goodyear shoes.

...My only complaint is wet traction. You hit a puddle, and you better hang on to that wheel!...

I work in construction everyday and haul a 16’ dual axle dump trailer. These tires have been great. Just shy of 34,000 miles now, and I will definitely get to 50k miles. They provide good traction in the mud and pulling.

My only complaint is wet traction. You hit a puddle, and you better hang on to that wheel! Otherwise they’re great.

...And these tires have outperformed the Toyo in every category... they don't squall in corners on dry asphalt...

I ran nittos on all my trucks up until they discontinued the grappler G2 and decided to try Toyo At3s. Those toyos only achieved 30k miles before they were unsafe to drive with. With no wet traction and barely any dry traction. So I then switched to these Recon Grapplers. And these tires have out performed the Toyo in every category. I have 14k more miles on these than I did the toyos and have more tread left, have 3x the traction in the rain and they don't squall in corners on dry asphalt. I will say, the ice traction and snow performance left a little to be desired, but they're not technically a snow rated tire so with that being said, I'm satisfied overall. Probably going to switch and try the falken wildpeaks next since they have a winter rating for snow but I'd definitely purchase this particular tire again for sure.

...They are decently quiet. Louder than my other past tires but just barely...

So far I have mixed feelings on these tires. I've had 3 different sets of tires on this truck so I can definitely compare how the truck reacts compared to the previous tire sets.

My first set was the Goodyear wranglers all terrain tires that came with it. They were good, not great, at any one thing. Decent tread life, quiet ride, handled predicably, and rarely got stuck in mud.

Second set were Cooper Discovery. Great highway ride, great in rain, good handling in rain and snow but HORRIBLE in mud where I live. Instantly filled up treads and wouldn't shed it. Would get stuck almost instantly in wet grass fields. Really frustrating if you had to go off road at all.

I bought the Nitto Recon Grapplers because I'd heard good things and they are pretty aggressive treads for off-road but we're told they were also surprisingly quiet on the highway. They are decently quiet. Definitely louder than my other past tires but just barely. Haven't done a lot of rain driving and it hasn't snowed this year yet but I think they'll do just fine in both. Off road I have had no issues and have not even had to put it in four-wheel drive through muddy areas. My biggest concern that makes me question keeping them is there high speed cornering in handling characteristics. First time I realized they were different, I was coming off in highway on ramp and the person in front of me slowed down unexpectedly. I had to tap the brakes and the whole car got completely out of whack and almost fishtailed. It was like the front and the back were totally trying to do different things. I've had similar situations with the previous tires and never felt the truck wiggle uncontrollably like that. It almost feels like the side walls are too wobbly at high speed and any quick steering input upsets the whole vehicle balance. I haven't done any trailering with them yet and I'm kind of nervous to try it. The tires have their strengths but on the highway, on a heavy truck, there are better choices.

Good tire for the price and treadwear. Definitely quieter than some other all-terrain and hybrid-terrain tires. Make sure to rotate them periodically because they do have a tendency to wear unevenly, especially on HD trucks. I got about 50,000 miles on my first set, and I will be ordering the same tires again. They do a pretty good job in most conditions. They are average on really wet roads and in slick mud but excel in normal on-road conditions and most off-road conditions. I would recommend these tires to someone who does a little bit of offroading, but who primarily wants a tire that looks aggressive, with minimal road noise, and decent on-road performance. There are better tires for offroad (mud terrain) and there are better on-road tires (highway/street tires), but these are a good in-between. Never had any issues with punctures, lugs falling off or wearing wrong, or trouble balancing. They work good for HD/LT trucks. They are fairly firm, so I recommend running them around 65 psi on HD trucks for ride comfort and airing them up when towing or carrying a heavy payload.
