Pirelli P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) tires are Max Performance Summer tires derived from Pirelli's Formula 1 experience and developed for use as Original Equipment on the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and MINI Clubman, with select replacement tire sizes also included in the lineup. P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) tires are designed for the drivers of sports car, sport coupes and high-performance luxury sedans and provide the convenience of temporary extended mobility in the event of complete air pressure loss. Pirelli's warranty does not cover tires that develop compound cracking due to use in ambient temperatures below 45° Fahrenheit (7° Celsius), so the P Zero Run Flat (PZ4), like all summer tires, is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) utilizes a special high silica content summer-only rubber compound that is molded into an asymmetric tread design focused on comfort, low rolling resistance, low noise and lateral hydroplaning resistance. Wide, circumferential grooves and lateral notches are utilized for efficient water evacuation at speed or while braking to improve resistance to longitudinal hydroplaning.

The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced by a hybrid nylon and Kevlar ZeroDegree cap ply. Based on the desired performance characteristics of the Original Equipment application, the tire casing will be two-ply polyester or one- or two-ply rayon, with either symmetric or asymmetric construction. With many combinations of material and orientation available during development, tire designers have the ability to fine-tune the tire's internal construction to further match the personality of the automobile for which it is engineered.

The sidewalls of the P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) feature additional reinforcement to provide self-supporting run-flat capabilities of up to 50 mph for up to 50 miles (80 km/h for 80 km). Due to these restrictions, it is imperative drivers be notified when a loss in tire pressure occurs and requires the vehicle be equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) to detect and signal tire pressure changes.

Though they cannot be labeled as run-flat tires, tires branded with MOExtended or MOE on their sidewalls offer run-flat-like characteristics by delivering limited temporary extended mobility after a puncture results in complete loss of air pressure. Because MOExtended or MOE tires do not have the same speed and distance endurance of conventional run-flat tires, they should not be substituted in any situation where a conventional run-flat tire is required. To confirm what your vehicle needs, check our Original Equipment tire listing for your year, make and model or see your vehicle owner's manual.

Pirelli P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) Reviews

Ratings data demonstrates the Pirelli P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) excels in its intended summer performance role, with dry traction earning consistent 9-10 scores for sharp handling and confident grip. Wet traction also impresses, with most ratings in the 8-10 range, highlighting reliable hydroplaning resistance. Comfort receives strong praise, with many noting a smooth, quiet ride (7-10 scores). Treadwear shows notable variability (0-10), though some drivers report satisfactory longevity for a max-performance summer tire. While a few mention lower treadlife expectations, the tire's focus on dry/wet precision and comfort aligns well with enthusiasts prioritizing dynamic driving over extended mileage.

...They are also great in the wet. From full tread to 4/32nds, I never felt uneasy about their wet handling in Northwest downpours...

I really love these tires, and I want to give the Pirelli P-ZERO PZ4 Runflats an honest review. I had a staggered set on my BMW X3 M40i for just shy of 20,000 miles, and they hadn't yet reached the wear bars - 4/32nds remaining. They were excellent. Since my staggered set can't be rotated front-to-rear, I expected one axle to wear faster, and instead, the wear was even and consistent all around. I've done some racing in the past and have a lot of seat time on a wide range of tires and compounds. These Pirelli's are superb in the dry with great steering response, grip and handling. They are also great in the wet. From full tread to 4/32nds, I never felt uneasy about their wet handling in Northwest downpours. At the limit (and that's really pushing) they have a progressive breakaway, and never felt edgy or twitchy. But equally impressive was the ride quality. Runflats are stiff - that's the reality. But I tried a set of Michelin Latitude 3 runflats back-to-back and there was no comparison. The ride quality on the Pirelli's is remarkable for a runflat. They are firm, but sport tire appropriate, with good compliance over bumps and seams. The Michelins felt like solid rubber, and actually made my interior panels rattle. They also felt heavy compared to the P-ZEROs. I felt like the car was working to get them rolling. I was super disappointed. I immediately went back to the P-ZEROs. Noise level is sport-tire moderate, and I had no quality problems with my P-ZERO set. I hit some really crappy pot holes that I thought would destroy a 40-series tire for sure - no issues. With so few options in this size/fitment, I'm really glad there's an option THIS good. I'm sold.

I would consider the tires to have very good traction in dry and wet conditions...

I like the tire pretty much as my other choice would be Michelins for the car which I think would be a bit quieter. Tires (fronts) were purchased to correct mismatched tires, so to match rears. Considered all weather but these were not available and have not had any complaints really in any weather conditions (do not have snow where I live but do have freezing temps occasionally). Tires on rear were replaced 10,000 miles after fronts. I did notice the older rears were becoming noisy as they wore. Don't know how many miles were on them but wear was approaching the wear bars. I would consider the tires to have very good traction in dry and wet conditions; do get noisy as they wear (not uncommon but I have had equivalent Michelins that seemed to remain quiet as they wore down.

OEM on a 2023 BMW X5 with 21” staggered sizes. Was expecting above average wet and dry performance. I was pleasantly surprised by ride quality and low noise levels especially for a run flat of this tire size. Hoping for 20,000 miles — time will tell.

Not many miles on them yet, but they have tremendous dry traction. Cornering is superb. Noise and ride comfort are improved over my last set and is, so far, better than what I expected.

...Razor sharp handling... Dry pavement braking is superb...

OEM on my MB CLS 53 AMG since new.
I take care of every tire I own like its my child. Alignments, pressures, inspections are very frequent.
These tires were used from new: 6/2019-2/2025
I am a light braker too and rate jackrabbit starts

Pros:
Razor sharp handling
Dry pavement braking is superb
They settle down very well on brand new smooth like glass asphalt and concrete

Cons:
Excessive road noise especially as tire wear
Every bump and lump in the road is felt
The left front delaminated at about 15000 miles. The right front was ready to delaminate too. The rears were down to 2/32-3/32. I was hoping to get 16-17K miles out of them

I have been very pleased with these tires. The ride quality is not a 10 because my tires are run-flats. But, for a run-flat tire these tires are very smooth and quiet.

During the year I’ve hade these tires, we’ve had snow, ice, rain and extreme heat, and none of these situations proved too much for my tires.

I’d like to thank Todd for his expertise with tires and the great conversation. Great Rep!

Thank you Tire Rack

...The only issue I have with these in the 19-inch variety is that the tread wears down very quickly. My car only has 15,000 miles and they will need to be replaced soon. And I never drive it in manual mode and never peel out...

These are one of the few OEM tires that come with 3-series and 4-series BMWs. I had Pirelli run-flats on my 2016 340i Msport in a smaller size, liked them a lot and got them on my 2019 440i Msport Gran Coupe with staggered 19-inch tires. They are by far the best OEM 19-inch run-flats for these BMW models with Msport suspensions in that they ride smooth and do not make a lot of road noise (actually none at all, even now at 15k miles). My first BMW with run-flats was a 2006 3-series, it had Bridgestones and by comparison they were a nightmare. The only issue I have with these in the 19-inch variety is that the tread wears down very quickly. My car only has 15,000 miles and they will need to be replaced soon. And I never drive it in manual mode and never peel out. While I do drive on the expressway a lot and also like taking corners within reason, that has always been the case and I have never had tires wear down so quickly. So be prepared to change them a lot if you have a high horsepower engine and enjoy spirited driving.

...so far, the wear has been excellent...

I bought these to replace the original Bridgestones that came on my 2019 BMW 430i (RWD w/M sport). These are used in south Florida where it’s often rainy and hot. These grip the pavement nicely and make driving more fun. I very rarely experience hydroplaning (did all the time with the Bridgestones), and so far, the wear has been excellent. Highly recommend for summer tires or if you’re primarily in a warmer climate. The pressure does tend to decrease when the temperature drops in the winter and I have to reinflate, but this has happened with every set of RFTs I’ve owned. They aren’t the smoothest ride, but I didn’t buy a sport car for a smooth ride.
