Pirelli Scorpion ATRThe Scorpion ATR is Pirelli's On-Road All-Terrain light truck tire developed for pickup, crossover and sport utility vehicle drivers. The Scorpion ATR is designed to master long highway journeys, wet roads and the challenges of winter driving by combining paved road comfort and handling with rough terrain grip and maneuverability.

The Scorpion ATR features a silica-enhanced tread compound molded into a quiet-running, symmetric all-terrain type tread pattern. A virtual continuous center rib and large, stable shoulder tread blocks provide directional stability and steering response while interlocked independent tread blocks in the center tread area further promote acoustic comfort. Sweeping central circumferential grooves and lateral shoulder grooves channel water to resist hydroplaning and enhance wet traction. The independent tread blocks are siped to provide extra biting edges that enhance off-road traction on loose surfaces and in snow. The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced with spirally wrapped nylon cord to support the tread area providing predictable handling and high-speed control, while polyester cords stabilize the sidewalls and enhance ride quality.

The Scorpion ATR is Pirelli’s On-Road All-Terrain light truck tire developed for pickup truck and sport utility vehicle drivers that want on-road civility along with off-road capability. Initially used as Original Equipment on Ford F-150 FX4, Lariat, and King Ranch models, as well as the Lincoln Mark LT, the Scorpion ATR is now available in a range of traditional light truck sizes, as well as extends All-Terrain Performance into the large rim diameter tuner sizes appropriate for today’s street/sport trucks.

Pirelli Scorpion ATR on Vehicle
The Scorpion ATR demonstrates off-road capability as it drives along Nevada’s rock-strewn trails.

Because the availability of the Scorpion ATR’s expanded size range preceded our 2006 test season in South Bend, members of Tire Rack Team were invited to experience the Scorpion ATR at a ride & drive conducted by Pirelli for journalists and tire dealers on the highways and desert north of Las Vegas, as well as at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Our first impression of the Scorpion ATR’s evolution was its expanded size range. Arriving at the Speedway, we saw test vehicles ranged from the Jeep Wrangler to the Lexus GX470, Ford F-150, Cadillac Escalade, and Hummer H2.

Pirelli Scorpion ATR on Vehicle
The Scorpion ATR proves its off-road traction on the sculpted obstacle course in the half-mile clay oval.

While no direct competitive tire comparisons were possible, the Scorpion ATR showed its on-road civility during our 35-mile trip from the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park. The tire’s combination of ride comfort, noise level and highway tracking on Interstate 15 was noted and its responsiveness and cornering capability along the twisting park roads was commendable. The Scorpion ATR later showed its off-road capability as it easily crawled up and down the terrain when we traveled some rock-strewn trails.

During our return to the Speedway, we encountered a hailstorm that blanketed the road and the surrounding landscape with pea-size hail for a short time. While it didn’t take long for the hail to be melted by contact with the warm earth and ensuing rain, neither condition appeared to faze the tires.

Once back at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, we had the opportunity to drive slowly through an off-road course sculpted in the dry infield of the Speedway’s half-mile clay oval. This gave us the opportunity to experience the tires’ traction up and over steep manmade inclines and descents, as well as feel their resistance to slipping sideways when driving across slopes. In all cases the tires performed as anticipated, exhibiting little wheelspin and sideslip.

Customers Say

Owners report excellent dry traction and wet performance, with scores consistently in the 9-10 range, highlighting confident handling and hydroplaning resistance. Winter traction earns praise for rugged conditions (7-9 range), though a few note reduced grip on ice. Ride comfort receives strong marks for smoothness, with many citing a quiet, composed feel. Treadwear scores 8-10, with users appreciating long-lasting performance in on-road and light off-road use. While most feedback aligns with its all-terrain purpose, occasional lower winter scores suggest prioritizing its strengths in dry/wet environments. Overall satisfaction reflects its capability as a durable, comfortable option for varied driving scenarios.

...As the weather deteriorated, the wet traction also impressed. Even in heavy rain and standing water the truck is very sure-footed...

These tire came OE on our new Sport Trac Adrenalin and are the first set of Perelli's that I have owned. We purchased the truck in August and my first impression was how smooth the vehicle rides on these 20-inch tires. As the weather deteriorated, the wet traction also impressed. Even in heavy rain and standing water the truck is very sure-footed. This weekend we got a dusting of snow that turned into a glaze of ice Saturday night. Sunday morning I was out early while it was well below freezing and I cannot tell you how pleased I am at the winter performance. These tires combined with the truck's all-wheel drive make for an unstoppable combination. Excellent traction and fine braking performance even on ice. I'd recommend the Scorpians to anyone.

...Rain - Great...

I have a NISSAN PATHFINDER 02 which came with BRIDGESTONE DUELER 689, which ----. After driving around for 12000 miles with them I got rid of them and bought me a new set of tires (PIRELLI SCORPION STR-A). They are of course a litle harder than my older tires but far better in every other aspect. Cornening now is a breeze, snow - bring it on, Rain - Great. I like a fast response even from a SUV and with these tires makes it possible. At 245/65 R17 you get a 520 A A which is great. Ive always used MICHELIN tires to replace my stock tires, this was the first time I used PIRELLI. I would certainly purchase these again.

Keep in mind PIRELLI tires have always been a better built tire but it is also a bit harder then the average tire. (PERFORMANCE)

P.S. I Work in a PORT where we get all kinds of cars and truck with different tires.

...Excellent dry and wet cornering; I havent explored their limits yet but they stick better than my last tires ever did...

Good Tires that deserve their high ratings. Though the tread pattern is not aggressive they have been great on ice and light snow. I live on a twisty dirt road that has been snow and ice covered and most of the time I havent needed 4WD. Quiet and true on the hwy. Excellent dry and wet cornering; I havent explored their limits yet but they stick better than my last tires ever did; Ive already scared some imports on the on/off ramps.

The first winter I had these tires on my rig they performed very well. 15,000 miles later, I had to have them siped because they became unsafe under any wet road, slush, light snow, or heavy snow conditions - even with 4 wheel drive. They are still performing subpar for my city driving habits.

I tried unsuccessfully to spin the tires several times on dry pavement, which the stock ones readily did...

I bought these tires just before making a move from Northern Ohio to Central Florida. The tires were a night and day difference from the stock Goodyear Wranglers (which I was disappointed with from the day I bought the truck). I tried unsuccessfully to spin the tires several times on dry pavement, which the stock ones readily did. Also, I encountered a side storm from the hurricane in Florida, and despite areas where the road was completely covered in several inches of water, the tires did not hydroplane (leaving me as one of the few vehicles not slowed to crawl!). So far I am completely happy with these tires! They look a lot better too, the sidewalls are very attractive with some tire dressing applied (the pictures dont do them justice)

...The only difficulty Ive had with these tires is in soft sand and the result was heavy bouncing of the back tires trying to gain traction. Soft easy acceleration of the turbo diesel without stopping was the only way to keep from getting stuck...

All my miles (57,000) are over a two year period and 90% are road miles. These tires came on my F-250 Super Crew Cab Lariat from Ford and have served me faithfully. These tires drove during two hurricane seasons in Florida and through our typical heavy downpours every year without hydroplane or drifting in a curve.

The tire has offered a very smooth ride except on jointed concrete roads where the tire belts make a noticable "clopping" noise (to be expected). The only difficulty Ive had with these tires is in soft sand and the result was heavy bouncing of the back tires trying to gain traction. Soft easy acceleration of the turbo diesel without stopping was the only way to keep from getting stuck.

Overall I have been happy with these tires and will purchase them again (and Im shopping now). Id like to get the tire a little wider than what I have presently as this might offer better traction when I am crossing the farms sugar-sand roadways (maybe a 285 rather than the 265?)

I have driven on these tires for one year and they are amazing! every once in a while I put my foot in it and the tires do not squeal one bit, and the tires hold corners and wet roads with ease. ...These are very nice tires that wear extremely well...

Picked up these tires to supplement the Hankook OE tires. Bought as take-offs from a F-350 with less than 50 miles on them. These are very nice tires that wear extremely well.

These tires are substantially better than the OE tires which are still periodically in service. But then comparing P radials with LT radials isn't fair.
