Pirelli Scorpion ATRThe Scorpion ATR is Pirelli's On-Road All-Terrain light truck tire developed for pickup, crossover and sport utility vehicle drivers. The Scorpion ATR is designed to master long highway journeys, wet roads and the challenges of winter driving by combining paved road comfort and handling with rough terrain grip and maneuverability.

The Scorpion ATR features a silica-enhanced tread compound molded into a quiet-running, symmetric all-terrain type tread pattern. A virtual continuous center rib and large, stable shoulder tread blocks provide directional stability and steering response while interlocked independent tread blocks in the center tread area further promote acoustic comfort. Sweeping central circumferential grooves and lateral shoulder grooves channel water to resist hydroplaning and enhance wet traction. The independent tread blocks are siped to provide extra biting edges that enhance off-road traction on loose surfaces and in snow. The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced with spirally wrapped nylon cord to support the tread area providing predictable handling and high-speed control, while polyester cords stabilize the sidewalls and enhance ride quality.

The Scorpion ATR is Pirelli’s On-Road All-Terrain light truck tire developed for pickup truck and sport utility vehicle drivers that want on-road civility along with off-road capability. Initially used as Original Equipment on Ford F-150 FX4, Lariat, and King Ranch models, as well as the Lincoln Mark LT, the Scorpion ATR is now available in a range of traditional light truck sizes, as well as extends All-Terrain Performance into the large rim diameter tuner sizes appropriate for today’s street/sport trucks.

Pirelli Scorpion ATR on Vehicle
The Scorpion ATR demonstrates off-road capability as it drives along Nevada’s rock-strewn trails.

Because the availability of the Scorpion ATR’s expanded size range preceded our 2006 test season in South Bend, members of Tire Rack Team were invited to experience the Scorpion ATR at a ride & drive conducted by Pirelli for journalists and tire dealers on the highways and desert north of Las Vegas, as well as at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Our first impression of the Scorpion ATR’s evolution was its expanded size range. Arriving at the Speedway, we saw test vehicles ranged from the Jeep Wrangler to the Lexus GX470, Ford F-150, Cadillac Escalade, and Hummer H2.

Pirelli Scorpion ATR on Vehicle
The Scorpion ATR proves its off-road traction on the sculpted obstacle course in the half-mile clay oval.

While no direct competitive tire comparisons were possible, the Scorpion ATR showed its on-road civility during our 35-mile trip from the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park. The tire’s combination of ride comfort, noise level and highway tracking on Interstate 15 was noted and its responsiveness and cornering capability along the twisting park roads was commendable. The Scorpion ATR later showed its off-road capability as it easily crawled up and down the terrain when we traveled some rock-strewn trails.

During our return to the Speedway, we encountered a hailstorm that blanketed the road and the surrounding landscape with pea-size hail for a short time. While it didn’t take long for the hail to be melted by contact with the warm earth and ensuing rain, neither condition appeared to faze the tires.

Once back at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, we had the opportunity to drive slowly through an off-road course sculpted in the dry infield of the Speedway’s half-mile clay oval. This gave us the opportunity to experience the tires’ traction up and over steep manmade inclines and descents, as well as feel their resistance to slipping sideways when driving across slopes. In all cases the tires performed as anticipated, exhibiting little wheelspin and sideslip.

...Tire does outstanding in the wet(we'll see as tread wears, if it continues)...

Purchase based on price and reviews, Tire does outstanding in the wet(we'll see as tread wears, if it continues) Tires are a little louder than my previous M/S tires, but this is an 07 yukon, not known for quiet ride or sound insulation, it's a truck, not a town car. Has nice highway manners, and for the price $150(clearance) it is an excellent value.

...I was driving through the city right after a heavy rain hit and a traffic light turned yellow. I thought I could make it but then I thought again and slammed the brakes. The tires held their traction and I came to a rolling stop right at the line...

After i bought these tires, i got more than I expected out of them. I read the reviews and I saw they were awsome tires and when i got them and installed them, they still managed to surprise me in all conditions, dry, wet, and ice/snow. I was able to climb an ice covered hill without breaking traction, while other people werent able to get half way up. Coming down the hill wasnt a problem at all either. What surprised me the most was the first night I drove on these tires. I was driving through the city right after a heavy rain hit and a traffic light turned yellow. I thought I could make it but then I thought again and slammed the brakes. The tires held their traction and I came to a rolling stop right at the line. The tires I had before would have sent me slideing halfway through the intersection. After that expeience, i would definately buy them again.

...I work in home construction so I already had a chance to try it out on muddy, wet streets. Excellent traction, especially since my Chevy is a Diesel, and all that low-down torque makes it easy to accidentally spin the tires a little pulling away from a stop... Not the Pirellis, even on slimy residential streets. Amazing. Blasted through a puddle of standing water too, with zero loss of control or stability - Hydroplaning a non issue...

Just picked these up yesterday. Was planning to go with Coopers again, which I was quite happy with and had no complaints about. But salesman talked me into these Pirellis for about 15 bucks more a tire. I had Pirellis on my Eagle Talon once, and liked them, so I thought Id give it a shot, see what kind of truck tires they make. Well, with 100 miles or so on them already today, Im very pleased with my purchase. The ride is exquisitely smooth and quiet up to my maximum speed thus far, 60mph, and the truck feels like it is more planted even in a straight line on dry pavement. These are real working tires in an E load rating, so I would assume C rated would tend to be a little more compliant. Still, very comfortable. Perhaps this can be attributed to a slightly flatter, wider tread profile than the old Coopers for the same size. I work in home construction so I already had a chance to try it out on muddy, wet streets. Excellent traction, especially since my Chevy is a Diesel, and all that low-down torque makes it easy to accidentally spin the tires a little pulling away from a stop. The Coopers did that new. Not the Pirellis, even on slimy residential streets. Amazing. Blasted through a puddle of standing water too, with zero loss of control or stability - Hydroplaning a non issue. And tomorrow, I drive to Moab, UT. So these tires are gonna be put to the ultimate test. 1300 mile main course will be served with some some hot red-rock four wheeling for dessert. Ill have a full report 10 days hence, and were all gonna find out how well those crazy Italians do when amateur hour is over and its time to park the Ferrari and get dirty. Looks promising so far - Im cautiously optimistic.

Best tire purchase I ever made. I've owned my Isuzu since new and these are by far the best overall tire I've had. In winter with the stock Goodyear's and the Michelin's I needed 4 wheel drive to climb the hilly roads in my area during winter, now I do it with ease in 2 wheel drive. Exceptional traction. Thanks to this site I decided on the Pirelli Tires to begin with.

My only thing that I wish I could change would be going up to a 275/70 16 as they float a bit more than I would like in hard pack snow so it would have been better to stay stock at 265/70 or go narrower to 245/75 but keep the 31 tire dia...

I was on the tire hunt in the fall of 06 and these where fairly new then. I had been having a hard time find something that met my Price to performance criteria. I put these on a set of steelies so I have driven them back to back with my now summer only X-Radials( Like the LTX M/S) My overall dry driving experience with them is awesome. They have loads of grip in dry handling and they are great when its wet. The X-Radials would give up before my trucks suspension but these tires will go as far as I ask them to. In winter driving theyve been great and handled all my snow driving without a problem. My only thing that I wish I could change would be going up to a 275/70 16 as they float a bit more than I would like in hard pack snow so it would have been better to stay stock at 265/70 or go narrower to 245/75 but keep the 31" tire dia. I am an avid hunter and I nomally have to drive out in the snow or mud and this year it was the mud. We had more mud than Ive ever had to deal with before and these tires handled it with ease. When I took them off in the spring they appear to have about zero wear. Anyways great tires and they are some of the best for the money.

...In the other categories they are simply unparalleled. I get excellent traction pulling boats up steep, and sometimes slimey, muddy or sandy boat ramps. They're great on the beach sand and don't dig too much, yet they still do wonderfully pulling a loaded trailer in the muddy mountains...

I am quite a skeptic and do not normally rate anything as a "10", but I rated this tire a "10" in 7 of the 11 categories. I drive 60 highway miles to and from work 5 days a week. I live at the beach and drive on the sand at least weekly. I have a vacation home in the northern edge of Pennsylvania and also travel much farther north to snowmobile. I also have an 18' fiberglass and a 14' aluminum boat that I tow...a lot. I travel to the mountains, as well, pull 2 ATV's on a trailer. (I guess you can tell I like my toys.) It's nothing to experience a Nor'easter in the Mid-Atlantic, often packing a more powerful punch than a hurricane. So my little truck and it's tires are put to many different tests. In the ice and snow these tires are better than most I've owned, but maybe not the absolute best. In the other categories they are simply unparalleled. I get excellent traction pulling boats up steep, and sometimes slimey, muddy or sandy boat ramps. They're great on the beach sand and don't dig too much, yet they still do wonderfully pulling a loaded trailer in the muddy mountains. During my most recent experience with a Nor'easter, these tires were most impressive. After 3 days of heavy winds, torrential downpours, heavy flooding, and a lot of highway driving through all this, I can't say enough about the wet weather traction. The ride is smoother and quieter than any high dollar Michelin I've ever owned. I've been looking at these tires and their customer reviews since I put tires on my previous Tacoma in 2003. My only regret regarding the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's is that I didn't start using them back then. I wish I had bought them sooner.

I purchased these from Tire Rack survey ratings. Incredible traction in almost all conditions plus these added a dimension of cornering to my nearly 8,000 pound truck that I had to experience to believe. About the only problem was their wide tread width on the ground which tended to throw slush or mud onto the body of the truck. That is why we wash these vehicles. I highly recommend this Pirelli tire!

...Good all-terrain tire for on wet or dry surfaces. They handle better on these surfaces than my previous sets of BFG AT KOs and have less road noise...

Having put over 2K miles on these tires (including over a dozen ski trips up the mountain with conditions ranging from a light dusting of snow to deep unplowed snow to ice) I can confidently say the following:

1. Good all-terrain tire for wet or dry surfaces. They handle better on these surfaces than my previous sets of BFG AT KOs and have less road noise.

2. Do fairly well/better than average on well-packed (i.e. plowed and well traveled roads).

3. Are not good in loose unpacked snow of any depth and fail miserably in heavy wet (slushy) snow or ice with any water on the surface. I had a miserable experience in these conditions recently. The vehicle that I was traveling with (also a AWD SUV) had fat, low profile performance tires (about the worst set-up imaginable for these conditions) and they did just as well as I did with my all-terrains. I have been in similar conditions with BFG AT KOs many times and have never gotten this vehicle stuck. This was a first, and looking at the way the treads packed up (and failed to clear) it was obvious why we had such problems.

Bottom line: If you do little or no driving in unpacked snow or ice then these are fine tires. If I had to do it all over again, there is no question that I go with the BFGs. Also an important note is that these tire are not rated as traction devices. So if you live or drive in conditions (as I do) which often require chains or traction devices, and you are not fond of "chaining-up", then you'll definitely want to look at other tires. I have gotten away with it so far, but I anticipate that sometime before these tires wear out I'll be turned around at a check point.

Also, immediately after purchasing these tires, I had to take them back due to a vibration. One tire was out-of-round (manufacturing defect) and had to be replaced.

Hope this info helps...

I rated these tires truly,as the driving conditions here in the garden state vary, day to day. As long as i have to buy tires,i will be buying from tire rack. Thank you!!!. A happy customer

I have noticed extra vibration when it's cold outside, but only in in the steering wheel. Never the rest of the truck...

I bought this truck in november 08. Was very impressed from the begining, since there was very much snow that year. Ice too. Still looks like the tread is more than half original depth yet. Expect to get 60000 plus on them. No problem. 2 things- on starts from a dead stop on wet pavement, it slips sometimes. But only with little or no weight in the back. Never fishtails, just slips. i am heavy footed though. And going thru standing water at hiway speeds of 60-75 mph I worry about hydroplane. But it always holds it's ground. I have noticed some extra vibration when it's cold outside, but only in the steering wheel. Never the rest of the truck. Best all around tire I've ever had on a truck-period. I will be buying these again in about 30000 to 40000 miles.

Great all around tire. I use have used this tire while towing off road toys out to the desert and hauling other heavy loads. The tread life is way better than the OE Bridgestones and the tire is equally as quiet and comfortable of a ride. I did not notice a significant fuel mileage difference despite the more aggressive tread. I recommend this tire for anyone who is doing mostly city/highway driving and occasionally going off road. all in all i have been extremely pleased with this tire.
