Pirelli Scorpion ATRThe Scorpion ATR is Pirelli's On-Road All-Terrain light truck tire developed for pickup, crossover and sport utility vehicle drivers. The Scorpion ATR is designed to master long highway journeys, wet roads and the challenges of winter driving by combining paved road comfort and handling with rough terrain grip and maneuverability.

The Scorpion ATR features a silica-enhanced tread compound molded into a quiet-running, symmetric all-terrain type tread pattern. A virtual continuous center rib and large, stable shoulder tread blocks provide directional stability and steering response while interlocked independent tread blocks in the center tread area further promote acoustic comfort. Sweeping central circumferential grooves and lateral shoulder grooves channel water to resist hydroplaning and enhance wet traction. The independent tread blocks are siped to provide extra biting edges that enhance off-road traction on loose surfaces and in snow. The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced with spirally wrapped nylon cord to support the tread area providing predictable handling and high-speed control, while polyester cords stabilize the sidewalls and enhance ride quality.

The Scorpion ATR is Pirelli’s On-Road All-Terrain light truck tire developed for pickup truck and sport utility vehicle drivers that want on-road civility along with off-road capability. Initially used as Original Equipment on Ford F-150 FX4, Lariat, and King Ranch models, as well as the Lincoln Mark LT, the Scorpion ATR is now available in a range of traditional light truck sizes, as well as extends All-Terrain Performance into the large rim diameter tuner sizes appropriate for today’s street/sport trucks.

Pirelli Scorpion ATR on Vehicle
The Scorpion ATR demonstrates off-road capability as it drives along Nevada’s rock-strewn trails.

Because the availability of the Scorpion ATR’s expanded size range preceded our 2006 test season in South Bend, members of Tire Rack Team were invited to experience the Scorpion ATR at a ride & drive conducted by Pirelli for journalists and tire dealers on the highways and desert north of Las Vegas, as well as at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Our first impression of the Scorpion ATR’s evolution was its expanded size range. Arriving at the Speedway, we saw test vehicles ranged from the Jeep Wrangler to the Lexus GX470, Ford F-150, Cadillac Escalade, and Hummer H2.

Pirelli Scorpion ATR on Vehicle
The Scorpion ATR proves its off-road traction on the sculpted obstacle course in the half-mile clay oval.

While no direct competitive tire comparisons were possible, the Scorpion ATR showed its on-road civility during our 35-mile trip from the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park. The tire’s combination of ride comfort, noise level and highway tracking on Interstate 15 was noted and its responsiveness and cornering capability along the twisting park roads was commendable. The Scorpion ATR later showed its off-road capability as it easily crawled up and down the terrain when we traveled some rock-strewn trails.

During our return to the Speedway, we encountered a hailstorm that blanketed the road and the surrounding landscape with pea-size hail for a short time. While it didn’t take long for the hail to be melted by contact with the warm earth and ensuing rain, neither condition appeared to faze the tires.

Once back at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, we had the opportunity to drive slowly through an off-road course sculpted in the dry infield of the Speedway’s half-mile clay oval. This gave us the opportunity to experience the tires’ traction up and over steep manmade inclines and descents, as well as feel their resistance to slipping sideways when driving across slopes. In all cases the tires performed as anticipated, exhibiting little wheelspin and sideslip.

...The tires are great in the rain. We get a lot in Florida and hydroplaning is not an issue when travelling through puddles at any speed...

Thee tires in an LT 235 replace P-Metric XL rated tires on my conversion van. I did this after reading about the distinction between load ratings between LT and P-Metric on this site. The Pirelli tires are fantastic. The van no longer wallows in the curves, it doesn't float at high speeds. The ride is a little stiffer but the trade off was worth it. I run them at 50psi and my mileage went from 14.4 to 15.8 with no other changes. The tires are great in the rain. We get a lot in Florida and hydroplaning is not an issue when travelling through puddles at any speed. I have drive the van to Chattanooga on vacation loaded with 2 adults, 3 kids and 2 labrador retrievers and was confident in the tires ability to handle any road condition. We went to look at some property after a rain and the tires handled the mud better than expected. Yes, they packed up pretty easily but the lugs cleaned themselves nicely with a little throttle applied. Since then we have been on vacation to Baltimore and Huntsville, which accounts for most of the miles driven. I also drive it to work on the interstate when it is too nasty to ride the motorcycle so my ratings are based mainly on highway driving. If you have a conversion van don't by XL rated P-Metric. Buy an LT tire......actually, buy this LT tire, you won't be sorry.

...Tire does outstanding in the wet(we'll see as tread wears, if it continues)...

Purchase based on price and reviews, Tire does outstanding in the wet(we'll see as tread wears, if it continues) Tires are a little louder than my previous M/S tires, but this is an 07 yukon, not known for quiet ride or sound insulation, it's a truck, not a town car. Has nice highway manners, and for the price $150(clearance) it is an excellent value.

...I've been in in the sand, in grass, in a little mud, in TONS of snow and on wet roads and I tow a 25' travel trailer...

Interesting how mostly Ford F-150 drivers hate these tires. I happen to buy a brand new set real cheap from a guy who didn't drive his new F-150 off the lot with these tires because of the F-150 forums bashing them so much. So I put them on my 2010 Sequoia and could not be happier. I've been in the sand, grass, a little mud, TONS of snow and wet roads and I tow a 25' travel trailer. I love these tires, but I don't like the new cost, which is a little high. So while I have ZERO COMPLAINTS, I'm not sure I would buy these again unless the cost came down a little.

I purchased a set of these Pirelli tires about two months ago in anticipation for a challenging winter of driving kids around for hockey season, and have found them to be everything I anticipated!! What really proved to me how good these tires are was our recent drive home from a wedding in North Dakota back to Wisconsin. After receiving 12+ inches of snow, they had closed the interstate on Sat. night and reopened it the following morning. We were able to easily drive around thru the unplowed city streets without any trouble, the traction and stopping ability in this amount of snow was amazing. We decided to set out on our 500 mile journey home on Sunday morning, and found that although the Interstate had been plowed, they were still covered with hard snow pack and ice. We drove over 120+ miles of these type of roads and they proved to be very stable & secure and exuded convidence. As we continued our drive back to WI we drove into 4" of new & falling snow, and again they allowed us to continue our drive with the utmost of confidence as it provided great traction. They seemed every bit as stable as the Michelin Cross Terrains that are on my wifes SUV. They are a huge step up from the Dunlops that came with the Sequoia which needed replacing after 30,000 miles!!

Syracuse winters are no match for this poisonous rubber. While donuts in the snow with your worn down goodyears is a blast, nothing is better than donuts on the best truck tire available. Not only does the radical tread design look cool but it is totally functional. These tires seem to eat snow for breakfast, lunch and dinner. (Mud is for desert) Youll be happy on road and off without doubt. Stop the search and write the check because the rubber with the little scorpion on the sidewall is everything you want and need.

...They definitely provide less dry traction/performance than the ATRs but for my needs it is a perfect compromise as the ATRs were not good in snow...

This set of tires replaced my Pirelli Scorpion STRs, which were awsome highway tires. Since I am a skier, I needed a better tire for winter driving so I chose these (ATRs). I am extremely pleased with the overall performance in wed/dry/snow conditions. They are very comfortable and quiet. They definitely provide less dry traction/performance than the ATRs but for my needs it is a perfect compromise as the ATRs were not good in snow. I rotate and balance every 10K so I always get the max out of my tires. The STRs lasted for about 50,000 mi and the ATRs are curently showing minimal wear. Hightly recommend these to any SUV owner who wants all weather capabilities in a tire but is not looking for top performance on dry roads. Also did notice a slight decline in gas milage as compared to the STRs and the STRs were also a slightly harder ride. The STRs are definitely more performance oriented while the ATRs are more for comfort and all weather capability. Love-em to death!

...The Perellis changed the whole feel of the vehicle on the highway. Dry traction, wet traction, cornering, noise...all improved dramatically...

My truck does not get many miles on it. I bought it two years ago with less than 50k miles and it still has less than 60k. The original Goodyear tires wore well but had terrible traction even on dry roads. Yes, I realize most of the tread was already worn but it was hard to not spin those tires when leaving a stop light. And although my tire pressure was correct they road HARD! The Perellis changed the whole feel of the vehicle on the highway. Dry traction, wet traction, cornering, noise...all improved dramatiically. Don't know about snow but I will soon. The truck is mostly used on our small horse ranch but I commute in it at least once a week and that puts me on 5 miles of gravel and then 50 miles of highway roundtrip to Topeka. I will try to post an update after winter driving. Would buy again even if not on sale!

...Dry and off road has been outstanding...

I bought these tires in Maryland knowing I was moving to Nevada and on/off road conditions. This is the second winter with them in Northern Nevada and the snow has been heavy this year. Tire wear including towing horse trailers has been excellent. Dry and off road has been outstanding. You sacrafice a little in snow since they are all weather and not pure snow tires, but even with 50K on them I'm doing fine in 8-10" of snow this year. I just moved 5 140lb bales of hay from snow covered field storage to my horse with no problem and then drove into town on barely plowed roadways. Before NEXT winter they will have about 70K on them and I'll replace them with the same tire. If you don't think they do good in snow, buy a snow tire, if you only got 50K or less out of them, learn about taking care of your tires. I'll easily get through this winter of snow, all next summer, and that will include rough off road excursions. AWESOME TIRE! Great price, great wear, great ability. I drive over jack brush and don't worry about it.

...Only negative so far is that I notice they are a little stiffer--this helps w/ turn-in, but it gives a little bit of a less compliant ride...

Just purchased these tires, but I can already tell they are a major improvement on the stock Goodyear SR-As. Definitely quieter...wasnt expecting that. Slightly heavier (5lbs) and taller (5 foot longer rollout) than SR-As...well see what these do to my mileage and bearing wear. I considered upgrading to Forteras, but I picked these based on the overwhelmingly positive responses here on TireRack. Really liked the look of the SR-As (white raised letters), but LOVE the Scorpions appearance...the directional sidewall detail definitely looks cool. Tread design looks to strike a good balance between street/offroad. Cant believe such a good tires is priced so low--much, much more reasonable than Goodyears or Michelins (only other 2 brands I considered). Only negative so far is that I notice they are a little stiffer--this helps w/ turn-in etc, but it gives a little bit of a less compliant ride. But hey, you cant fault a Pirelli for making your ride steer sharper, right? All in all, I am extremely happy w/ this tires. At $105/tire (245-70-16) these are an absolute steal!

...But initially... VERY comfy and quiet. Unexpected for an all-terrain tire... they ride really nice and are very quiet...

I will add a new review after I put more miles on them. But initially... VERY comfy and quiet. Unexpected for an all-terrain tire. They have a fair amount of tread-squirm until heat-cycled. They handle decently, but not nearly as well as a regular highway tire. That's my one disappointment, but this is also my first all-terrain tire. I chose it because it got great ratings for snow and decent ratings for wear. My truck is a 4wd dually and I do a lot of towing, so I hope these last. I actually wanted the General HTS Grabbers but they were on national backorder, and the Michelin LT/X is out of my price range, so I decided to try these. They're way more aggressive looking in person than the photo depicts. A very beefy-looking tire. I haven't had a chance to drive in the rain or snow yet, but on dry roads, they ride really nice and are very quiet. They definitely do NOT have the cornering performance of a regular tire. I've been able to slide the back end out (just a little) a couple of times by rolling on the power around a corner and having the boost come up (my truck is a 6sp manual). Anyway, so far, so good. I'll report back again during or after the Winter... I travel over Donner Summit frequently.

Only had them for 1500 miles, and they already saved me from getting stuck in a snow drift miles from civilization. Very quiet tire, and very pleased with the treadwear. Was surprised at how shallow the tread depth seems to be from the start, but it looks to be wearing very well. I will follow up on this tire later down the road, but so far no complaints. Agressive tread design adds to the look of the vehicle. For the price, you cant beat it!

OEM tires for the Ford F150. Didn't really like them. Too easy to spin them up in wet, muddy or winter conditions, particularly with no load. Terrible winter traction in particular. Good in the dry though. Tread wear was ok, but I changed them out after 50k kms for Nokian winter tires. Road noise was acceptable.

I would definitely recommend these tires for their longevity and if you want a little bit of aggressive tread while remaining a good highway tire. Glad I purchased these!
