The ADVAN A048 is Yokohama's Streetable Track & Competition racing tire developed for drivers who participate in autocross competition, high-performance driving schools, lapping days and circuit-type club racing, as well as are Original Equipment (O.E.) on the Lotus Elise and Exige. The ADVAN A048 is designed to take Yokohama's advanced racing technology to a new level in DOT-approved tire performance by delivering precise control, sure-footed braking and predictable grip.

ADVAN A048 radials meet DOT requirements, however they are not recommended for driving in wet conditions where standing water is present and there is the risk of hydroplaning; drivers should drive cautiously at reduced speeds if they encounter these conditions.

Important Care And Usage Instructions: The ADVAN A048 was developed using high performance compounds which become brittle at low temperatures, and therefore should not be used in certain conditions. ADVAN A048 tires thus must be stored or used only at temperatures at or above 14°F (-10°C) to maintain performance characteristics and to avoid any damage to the tire or injury to persons or property.

The ADVAN A048 molds race-ready tread compound(s) (offering Medium or Medium-Hard choices in many sizes) that can be used to match the tire's capabilities to vehicle weight and performance, as well as track conditions and ambient temperatures. It features a "single block" tread design that increases tread stiffness and features a wide center area that stays in continuous contact with the track to enhance cornering stability, on-center feel and steering response. The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced with spirally wrapped nylon cap plies and belt edge strips. The belt package is placed on top of a rounded casing design that allows the tire to predictably handle transitions from straight-line travel to high g-force cornering and back.

ADVAN A048 tires are molded with 6/32" of tread depth in their grooves and are left unshaved for use on damp tracks. We suggest shaving ADVAN A048 tires to approximately 4/32" of tread depth to begin competitive road racing/track use in dry conditions. The ADVAN A048's directional tread design and symmetric internal construction allows remounting partially worn tires inside-out on their wheels to help prolong their life.

Warning: ADVAN A048 radials meet DOT requirements, however they are not recommended for driving in wet conditions where standing water is present and there is the risk of hydroplaning; drivers should drive cautiously at reduced speeds if they encounter these conditions. This is especially true of shaved or worn tires. And like other Streetable Track & Competition tires, these tires are not intended to be stored, serviced nor driven in near- or below freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

Customers Say

Drivers find the Yokohama ADVAN A048 delivers outstanding dry traction with precise cornering and consistent lap times, making it a top choice for track days and autocross. Wet performance receives mixed feedback-some praise its predictable grip in light rain when new, but note hydroplaning risks as tread wears. Tread life is short even for an R-compound tire, with many reporting rapid wear after 5,000-7,000 miles or 6-8 track events, though enthusiasts accept this trade-off for peak performance. Heat cycling and alignment sensitivity are noted concerns, but the tire's track-focused design earns strong praise from competitive drivers.

While some note rapid tread wear expected in competition use, grip remains confidence-inspiring during aggressive driving.

I just bought these tires , and the first impression is: The tire is aawsome tire for sport/race ride on dry conditions . Here on Brazil , streets tarmac are not very stable on irregularites ,tires seems to be a litte noisy , but this is aceptable on race tires . Grip during acceleration/cornering on dry is awsome. Precision steering seems to be the best i ever had. The car is front Wheel drive ,turbocharged with 300hp class. Overall handling has been improved besides my old tires ( Toyo´s T1 R ) on dry .

On wet , i drive real smooth ,resistance on hydroplaning is reduced by thread design . If you want to race on dry conditions , with all performance avaliable ,these are the best set avaliable. Hope it last more than people talks arround here.

A huge improvement over the All-Season I have been auto-crossing on, which is to be expected. The turn in and steering response you get from these is amazing. I had a huge smile on my face during my first run because of the massive amount of grip I had at my disposal. No more do I have to wait for the car to react to any of my inputs. If you are thinking of making the switch from all-seasons/summer tires to R-Comps, do it, you won't regret it.

If you don't plan on tracking/auto-crossing these tires, it is a waste of money. You have to fight the steering wheel to go in a straight line because these pull on every pothole and pavement seam you drive over, there is a pronounced tire hum, and the incredibly stiff sidewalls don't bode well for the ride quality or your wheels. Save the money and get some all-seasons/summer tires instead.

I bought the AO48s for track use only, and they exceeded my expectations on the track in every way. The steering responsiveness was far better then any other tire Ive used. The cornering traction was simply unbelievable. Braking distance greatly reduced.

These tires are not for highway use. They are very, very loud at all speeds. I would recommend a harder compound for any extended lapping. I noted significant wear in four 25 minute sessions on the track. For autocross use they are ideal, and I would highly recommend them.

61 customers mention "Wet Traction"

  • 26 positive
  • 35 negative

Users report mediocre wet traction, with some noting a tendency to hydroplane as tread wears. Several experienced sliding in wet conditions during autocross, even with proper pressures. While a few found initial wet performance acceptable, most were unimpressed, highlighting poor grip and instability in rain, especially as the tires age.

...Its quiet but not so great when its wet out, so when its wet out, Im more cautious...

This is THE tire if you drive it like you stole it!!! I purchased a set of these for my Porsche after my directional Falkens left me spinning circles, literally. Porsches are known for there handling and these tires let the Porsche shine like no other! Better put on a diaper if your gonna ride with me because these tires are super sticky and it is nothing to dive into a corner doing 80 or 90 mph with no problem. Definitly will be buying another set when I need to replace these!!!

  • 48 negative

Reviews scoring 6 and below highlight significant treadwear concerns, with multiple users disappointed in tread life despite track-focused use. Several noted rapid wear, lasting only 3,600-8,000 miles or 6-8 track days, with heat cycling causing premature grip loss. Others reported tires reaching wear bars far sooner than expected, requiring frequent replacement even when rotated.

Wet traction was good for this type of tire when new, but as expected as the tread has worn away hydroplaning has become more of a problem.

...They never had much grip to begin with, and what little grip they did have fell off rapidly after just a few heat cycles... I honestly think Hankook R-S3 street tires generate more outright grip than these Yokos...

Ran a set of medium-hard compound A048's for one season on my track car. Dry use only; no street use.

Among the worst DOT-R tires I've ever used. They never had much grip to begin with, and what little grip they did have fell off rapidly after just a few heat cycles. Al they do is make a ton of noise and slid around all over the place. I honestly think Hankook R-S3 street tires generate more outright grip than these Yokos. They're that bad.

On the plus side, they seemed to have very good sidewall stiffness: turn-in was crisp and predictable. Also, they didn't seem too sensitive to camber (I guess the rounded shoulders have something to do with that). This is a big advantage on camber-challenged cars with McPherson front struts, like BMW's and my 190E.

Ultimately, the grip and longevity just weren't where they needed to be. There are FAR better choices for similar (or less) money. The R888 is a much better choice for all-around, casual track use. If lap-times matter, then the Hoosier R6 or Hankook Z214 are miles ahead.
