The best tires for your Tesla depend on your driving style and climate. EV-specific tires are designed to handle instant torque, reduce road noise and improve efficiency to help maximize driving range.

Tesla Tire FAQs

Do Teslas need special tires?

Original equipment Tesla tires have one major distinguishable feature from regular electric vehicle tires: a special layer of acoustic foam. This addition helps drastically reduce tire noise inside the cabin. As electric-powered Teslas do not use a combustion engine, the tires are the main source of cabin noise. Without noise reduction technology, hearing tires on the road has proved to be a common complaint among Tesla owners. Traditional gas-powered vehicles do not usually have this issue as the engine noise blocks out the sound generated by tires.

However, using original Tesla tires with acoustic foam is not necessary to operate the vehicle. If hearing tire noise does not bother you, choosing an aftermarket replacement without the foam can save you a little bit of money. Any tire that fits your Tesla wheels will work, as long as they meet or exceed the load and speed rating specified for your model.

Electric vehicles have more torque and weight than gas-powered vehicles. Regular tires on an electric vehicle can wear out much more quickly as a result. Take a look at Tire Rack's extensive selection of electric vehicle tires to find plenty of options that are compatible with your Tesla. When searching for tires by vehicle, we only show appropriate tires in our results.

Teslas do not require special tires, but EV-specific tires are recommended because they are designed to handle instant torque, reduce noise and improve efficiency.

Are winter tires necessary for Tesla?

Yes, winter tires are recommended for driving in temperatures below 40°F, as they provide significantly better traction and braking on snow and ice compared to all-season tires.

Do Tesla tires affect range?

Yes, low rolling resistance tires can help improve efficiency and maximize your Tesla’s driving range.

Are EV-Specific Tires Better than Popular Non-EV Tires?

In this test, we compare EV-specific and non-EV tires across multiple categories using a pair of Teslas. From efficiency and road characteristics to wet and dry handling, braking and overall rankings, we break down how each tire performs to help you make the right choice.
