What Is HPDE? A Beginner's Guide to High Performance Driver Education

(Lea en español)

Published: June 25, 2026

You've probably seen the acronym HPDE while browsing enthusiast forums, watching track videos, or researching performance driving events. HPDE stands for High Performance Driver Education, and it's one of the best ways for enthusiasts to safely explore their vehicle's capabilities, improve their driving skills, and have fun on a racetrack.

Unlike racing, HPDE events focus on learning. Drivers receive instruction, follow passing rules, and participate in controlled environments designed to help them become faster, smoother, and safer behind the wheel.

What Happens at an HPDE Event?

Most HPDE events are organized into skill groups ranging from beginners to advanced drivers. New participants typically attend classroom sessions and receive in-car instruction from experienced coaches.

Throughout the day, drivers rotate between track sessions and educational briefings, learning concepts such as braking technique, cornering, vehicle dynamics, and racing line fundamentals. Woody Rogers, Tire Rack's SVP of Tire Testing and Information and a 25-plus-year veteran of the tire industry, described your first track experience best:

"There's almost nothing more exciting than getting a chance to drive your car at speed on a racetrack. It's something you just can't do safely or legally on public roads. It brings a greater level of safety with runoff room so you can safely explore the limits of your driving skill and your car's capabilities. So that by itself is very rewarding. What comes with it is the education piece that with some practice and repetition, along with instruction that can hone your driving skills on the track."

What Should I Bring to My First HPDE?

Showing up prepared can make your first HPDE experience significantly more enjoyable.

Start by making sure your vehicle is mechanically sound. Check tire pressures, inspect your brake pads, verify fluid levels, and address any leaks before arriving at the track. Many organizations require a technical inspection before allowing vehicles on the course.

  • Plenty of water and snacks
  • Sunscreen and comfortable clothing
  • A helmet that meets your event organizer's requirements
  • A tire pressure gauge and air compressor if the track does not provide air
  • An open mind and willingness to learn from instructors

Track days often involve several hours between driving sessions, and monitoring tire pressures throughout the day can help maximize performance and consistency.

"I would say plenty of water and sunscreen," Woody said on what to bring for your first track experience. "You're outside and it's often hot and sunny. Also the ability to add air pressure to your tires. Many tracks have it, but if you're not sure, bring your own provision."

Most importantly, bring an open mind. Your first HPDE is about learning, not chasing lap times. Listen to your instructors, focus on smooth inputs, and enjoy the opportunity to improve your driving skills in a safe environment.

Choosing the Right Tires for HPDE

While experience and the vehicle itself play a role, tires play the biggest role in the HPDE experience. Many newcomers can participate on quality street tires, while drivers who attend multiple events often upgrade to more performance-focused options to maximize their lap times.

There is no simple and easy answer to which tire is best because the best tire for HPDE depends on your experience level, vehicle, and goals. Let's break down tire selection into skill levels to determine the best choice for your next track day.

New Drivers

Continental ExtremeContact Force tire

For starting out, what you currently have on your car is often the best first option before upgrading. While they may wear much quicker than a dedicated track or performance tire, your first track experience does not require special tires before you determine if you enjoy the track experience.

After your first track day or when you are ready to upgrade, a tire like the Continental ExtremeContact Force offers strong grip while remaining forgiving and comfortable enough to return to your daily driving between track sessions.

Intermediate Drivers

Bridgestone Potenza RE-71RZ tire

As your skill and pace increase, consider transitioning to Extreme-Performance Summer tires as they are designed to withstand the added demand of a track environment. Popular options include the Bridgestone Potenza RE-71RZ, Yokohama ADVAN A052, and Falken Azenis RT660+, all of which offer higher grip and sharper steering response that can translate into shorter lap times and better tread wear.

"All-season tires or anything else that might be on your car will not wear very well when you drive at the limit on the track," said Woody. "Putting on an Extreme Performance tire with the way they are designed, their tread patterns, their tread compounds, and even the tread depth, really play a role in them holding up better."

Advanced Drivers

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire

Drivers focused on maximizing lap times often move to track-oriented options such as the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar 3R. These tires offer exceptional dry-track performance but often sacrifice tread life and wet-weather capability for all-out grip.

To help make your decision easier, our team of experts regularly puts tires through some of the most comprehensive testing on the planet. Check out the Extreme Performance Summer Track Tire Test, which compares some of the most popular high performance track tires on the market.

HPDE vs. Autocross

While both activities help drivers improve their skills, they offer very different experiences.

HPDE takes place on a closed track course where drivers can experience higher speeds, longer corners, and sustained performance driving. Autocross events are typically held in large parking lots using a cone-defined course. Runs usually last less than a minute and emphasize precision, quick reflexes, and vehicle control.

Many enthusiasts participate in both because each teaches different skills. HPDE focuses on high-speed awareness and consistency, while autocross rewards quick thinking and precise vehicle placement.

HPDE Frequently Asked Questions

What is HPDE?

HPDE stands for High Performance Driver Education. These programs combine classroom learning and on-track driving to help participants improve their skills and better understand vehicle dynamics.

How Do I Take Care of My Tires Between Track Sessions?

As you put more intense demand on your tires, it's important to know how to ensure they are still safe to use for your next track session. Check out our full guide on tire inspections between track sessions, but the main things to monitor are uneven wear across the whole tread, scuffing or wear past the edge of the tread, and torn tread visible as a faint line across the tread.

What is Autocross?

Autocross is a timed driving event held on a temporary course marked by cones. Drivers compete individually against the clock rather than racing wheel-to-wheel. It's one of the most affordable and accessible forms of motorsports.

Do I Need Special Tires for HPDE?

Not necessarily. Many first-time participants attend HPDE events on quality summer tires. As skill levels and track pace increase, more specialized performance tires often become beneficial.
