The ExtremeContact Sport 02 is Continental’s next-generation Max Performance Summer tire, developed for drivers of sports cars, performance coupes, sedans, and muscle cars seeking a satisfying balance of traction and handling, quiet comfort, and tread life. Like all summer tires, the ExtremeContact Sport 02 is not intended to be driven, stored, or serviced in near- or below-freezing temperatures, through snow, or on ice.

ExtremeContact Sport 02 callouts

Utilizing a specialized summer-only compound molded into a ribbed asymmetric design, the ExtremeContact Sport 02 features Continental's SportPlus Technology, which focuses on precise handling, wet traction, and enhanced wear for well-rounded maximum performance. The outside shoulder features wide tread blocks for lateral grip and high-speed handling, and the continuous center rib provides constant rubber-to-road contact for solid on-center feel. A wide, optimized footprint evenly distributes pressure across the face of the tire for improved tread life. Continental employs its patented +Silane tread compound technology to provide sure-footed handling in damp conditions, and deep, circumferential grooves offer efficient pathways for water evacuation through the contact patch for hydroplane resistance.

The internal construction of the ExtremeContact Sport 02 consists of a two-ply polyester casing supporting two steel belts. A polyamide reinforcement ply adds high-speed stability and performance.

Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.

Flexing of the specialized rubber compounds used in Max Performance Summer tires during cold-weather use can result in irreversible compound cracking. Compound cracking is not a warrantable condition because it occurs as the result of improper use or storage, tires exhibiting compound cracking must be replaced.

Customers Say

User feedback reveals the Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 delivers excellent dry traction, with consistent 9-10 scores for grip and cornering stability. Wet traction also earns strong praise (8-10 range), though a few note reduced hydroplaning resistance in heavy rain. Ride comfort and noise levels are generally positive (7-9 scores), described as smooth for a performance tire. Treadwear receives mixed feedback, with some users reporting shorter-than-expected tread life despite 7-9 ratings, suggesting it may wear faster under aggressive driving. Overall, it aligns well with its Max Performance Summer category, prioritizing responsive handling and confident dry/wet performance while balancing everyday usability.

...These tires seem to put the power down very well even out of corners, and they are much better in rain than the stock Bridgestone S001L tires...

On its stock tires, my IS 500 was begging for better traction, and these Continentals have done the trick. I appreciate the responsive, yet predictable behavior of these tires in spirited driving. They are not twitchy, but they feel decidedly sporty. These tires seem to put the power down very well even out of corners, and they are much better in rain than the stock Bridgestone S001L tires. They are not the quietest tires ever, but they also seem to be quieter than the stock tire and possibly even quieter than the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires I had on my IS 350. Ride is also decent, though I can feel smaller impacts from cracks in the road. Overall, these tires feel just about perfect for this car. They are grippy and easy to drive at the same time. Over the 6,000 miles I've put on the tires, I still have about 7/32" tread remaining, so I expect to be able to put about 10,000-12,000 more miles on them, which isn't too bad for the kind of tire.

...Last summer, I took a trip from Colorado to Illinois and back. I went through heavy rain at highway speeds and had no problem with hydroplaning.

These tires took away the “let me slide around this corner” tendency from the stock tires and replaced it with strong, steady cornering. You'll need to work to break them free, and to be honest, if that's what you want, these tires are not for you.

Besides holding the road well, the road noise isn't bad. They are softer than stock, and that translates through the steering wheel. After running through two full sets of the stock tires, I wasn’t happy with the softer feel at first, but I’ve since grown accustomed to it.

They’re going to last longer than the stock tires, which is great, especially considering they’re softer. Last summer, I took a trip from Colorado to Illinois and back. I went through heavy rain at highway speeds and had no problem with hydroplaning.

Unless something better comes along, I’m sticking with these.

The dry traction is excellent. Much better than the Dunlop summer tires( DZ 102) that came with the car. The car has not been driven in the rain so can't say anything about wet traction. Have yet to track the car to really see what these tires will do. They ride better then the Dunlops but thought the would be a little smoother on bumps.

Given the mission for this class of tire, it’s one of the best I’ve experienced for the price for a daily driver (I’ve used these on other cars). So far, with less than 2K miles, very good (and improving) dry traction, very good wet traction, excellent road holding curves / corners, not the sharpest turn in, fairly low noise (better as the tire warms), little or no flat spotting, somewhat squirrelly over grooved pavement, very good on sharper impacts, excellent rolling smoothness, little impact on fuel economy vs. OEM all seasons. In my experience, they’re better than many UHP all season tires for the money in moderate climates (I have no experience in hot climates, and use dedicated winter tire & wheel sets). Would buy again.

Extremely satisfied with these tires. Wet traction allows for driving with confidence here in Florida's rain. Wet traction during acceleration is the best I have experienced with any tire, an excellent match to the GLI's LSD. Dry traction is typical for Continental's ECS DW and is great with the 02. Noise and comfort are typical for a sport tire. Wearing evenly and typical for 8300 miles. I expect to continue to enjoy them! Highly recommended, especially for wet traction.

...make the road feel like it's covered with velvet!!!! ... The ride is phenomenal!!!...

Holy Moly!!! These tires make the road feel like it's covered with velvet!!!! I tried a city block 90 degree turn at 50 mph to see if I could get these tires to break loose. No joy! They didn't even chirp!!!!! The ride is phenomenal!!! I haven't really had a chance to try wet road characteristics yet (we're just now getting into the rainy season where I live). I'm guessing these Connies will fit the bill. As for treadwear, the jury is still out, as I've only got about 500 miles or so on them. They certainly couldn't be any worse than the Michelin Pilot Sport 2s that I had on my BMW X5. (Note: I put the new Connies on my BMW 325i) The Michelins only lasted 4K miles, and that with driving like an old lady. (I couldn't believe it!!!!!!) In summary, so far, these tires are just what I was looking for. If they last 10K or more, I'll be a fan for life!!!!!!! After thought: ride noise is very quiet. Not perfect, but still excellent.

...As a daily tire, they are quite comfortable: low road-noise, confidence in the wet, and good wear life...

Used these tires as my daily/mountain setup. Lasted me quite a while considering I spent countless weekends up on the mountain. As a daily tire, they are quite comfortable: low road-noise, confidence in the wet, and good wear life. As for grip, they won't keep up with any 200tw tires but they come close. I never tracked these tires as I heard from friends that they would be gone after a full track day. Overall, I highly recommend this tire for anyone looking for a daily/spirited driving dual duty.

...And oh my gosh it transformed my Pontiac into a predictable locked down car in the corners and a well behaved car in daily drivingmuch less jittery and harsh. I've never had tires change a car so much for the positive until these tires... Just a great sticky sporty tire but comfortable...

My firebird trans am felt a little twitchy and harsh on most surfaces and loved to tram line everywhere with the large c6 corvette wheels fitted 18 in fronts and 19 inch wheels in back. I retired the old Michelin pilot sports a/s 3+’s for the Continental extreme contact sport 02s mainly due to the grip and reported refinement as a summer tire in reviews.

And oh my gosh it transformed my Pontiac into a predictable locked down car in the corners and a well behaved car in daily driving… much less jittery and harsh. I’ve never had tires change a car so much for the positive until these tires. This may be my go to tires from now on which is saying a lot as with tires I normally bounce around. Just a great sticky sporty tire but comfortable. Which is important as the wife will now ride with me in the old Pontiac again.

This is a long term update.

I have 11,000 miles on these tires, they look good, ride, great, handle excellently, are quiet, And all around superlative performance tire for the street.

These have a 30,000 mile treadwear rating but on my staggered fitment car, the warranty is cut in half to 15,000 miles. I am at 11,000 now and expect to get easily another five out of the rears, fronts will make 30k easily.

The only gripe, and it is a big one, Is that the tread runs narrow on these tires. Narrow enough that you get a lot of sidewalk contact with the ground compared to tires with a wider tread and a more square corner, like the primary competitor to this tire, the Michelin pilot sport 4S.

It’s not that big of a deal, but it did bother me a lot for a while (OCD perhaps). I have a separate set of tires and wheels for the track and wish that these looked as beefy as those do…. You can always size up 10 mm in width, do so if you’re the 5% of buyers who would find this a concern.

All in all, while you may have a preference between these and the Michelin, neither are a bad choice, both are excellent options, and price was the deciding factor for me.

Recently toured from the SF area to the Central Valley of California, up Highway CA 120 past Yosemite national Park, onto Highway CA 108, over to I 395, and up into Lake Tahoe, then down US 50 to I 80 back to the Bay Area. I was marveling at how good these were in that trip. Hard to imagine a tire performing more perfectly!
